A three day event attended by over 1,800 people in New Jersey, the Konkani Sammelan 2012, celebrates the diversity of talent and success within the Konkani community of North America. Konkani is an Indo-Aryan language spoken on the Konkan coast of Western India and those of Konkani descent celebrate and value education and excellence. The purpose of the awards is to recognize persons of Konkani descent in North America (USA, Canada and Mexico).
Nine fields were identified, ranging from sports and performing arts to research and technology. Nominations were accepted from all over North America and were evaluated by a committee of seven members. At this past Konkani Sammelan, hosted in Edison, New Jersey June 29th to July 1st, one of Saint Mary’s Colleges’ own was nominated and recognized for his excellence in education and academic service.
Dr. Shyam J. Kamath, Associate Dean of the Saint Mary's College School of Economics and Business Administration's Graduate Business Programs, is the 2012 recipient of the Award for Excellence in the field of Education. “I am surprised and humbled by the recognition from the Konkani community in North America for my work in the field of global education at Saint Mary’s College of California and other universities in the United States and Canada. The Konkanis set a very high standard of achievement in all the fields of education especially medicine, engineering, law, arts and management and it is a very great honor to be selected from a very diverse and talented field of nominees.
