Trial lawyer, mediator & arbitrator
Eric Ivary has thirty years experience as a trial lawyer. He is now a mediator and arbitrator.
In my line of work, first as a trial lawyer and now as a mediator, I've found that telling and recognizing a compelling story is key to communication. What better way to recognize the power of the story in today's world than to tap into the stories that have moved people for centuries. These stories, from Chaucer to Hemingway, have moved people for centuries. As one of my professors was fond of saying, there's really no new story. Just variations on the old ones.
These days being skilled in English is a huge advantage for a lot of reasons. With oral communication being important, English is more than a skill. It's essential. When you're talking, poor communication can hurt your chances in business not to mention in your personal life. But with e-mails comprising a lot of the business and personal communication today, "misspeaking" can be a real disaster because there's a written memorial of your "misspeak".
