Core Curriculum Task Force
September 7, 2007
Dear Saint Mary's Community,
The Core Curriculum Task Force is entering into phase two of its mandated work from the Academic Senate/Educational Policies Board. Mary True and Roy Wensley have served out their year as Co-Chairs, and I, Ellen Rigsby, have assumed these duties for the academic year 07/08. One of our student members, Feke Lauti, graduated, and has been replaced by Skylar Covich. If you are not familiar with what we accomplished last year, please visit our website at http://smcnet.stmarys-ca.edu/academics/cctf/index.html.
As we did last year, we will sponsor many opportunities for community input and discussion about the Core Curriculum. Two important upcoming dates for the community are:
- October 10: A proposed set of learning goals and outcomes will be presented to the campus.
- October 17: A Community Time session to engage in a campus-wide discussion of that draft.
The rest of the fall will be a time to “evaluate the strengths and limitations of the present SMC core curriculum, including its integration with major/minor programs, in light of the newly established learning outcomes,” (from the initial Senate charge to the committee). We propose to hold public meetings open to the campus community throughout the rest of the semester and into the next to discuss the current requirements in the following groupings: Areas A and B, Area C and Composition, Seminar, Jan term and Religious Studies, Diversity and the Language Proficiency. This will culminate in a February 13, 2008 Community Time that will offer a time to envision courses that faculty might offer under the new learning goals.
We would like to remind you that our charge is to put together a curriculum that reflects the mission and the community. Our time, this year as last, belongs to you. To contact the whole committee, send messages to the chair, but also feel free to contact any individual member as well.
Sincerely,
Ellen Rigsby, Chair, erigsby@stmarys-ca.edu
