departmental initiative grants
Grants are available for Departmental Initiatives under the presidential Teaching and Learning Initiative. Departments may apply for grants to support collaborative departmental or cross-departmental initiatives that are intended to enhance teaching and learning. Total allocation: $20,000 ($10,000 per year for two years: 2000/01, 2001/02)
Examples of projects this grant may support:
- Departmental retreats that focus on issues of teaching and learning
- Bringing in a consultant or workshop presenter to address specific departmental or curricular needs
- Creating tests or other forms of assessment intended to improve teaching and learning
Application Process
The application should contain the following items:
- Cover sheet (attached)
- Proposal:
Title of project
The problem or question you will address. Why is it important?
What methods will you use to address your problem/question? What data do you expect to collect? How will you analyze it? How will you use the data?
How will you evaluate your project?

Selection Process
Applications are due on December 15 and April 15. A subcommittee of the Committee on Teaching and Scholarship and an outside reviewer will conduct a blind review. Departments will be notified within a month of the respective due date whether their application was successful.
Criteria for Selection:
- Value of the project to the quality of student learning at SMC.
- Are the proposed methods appropriate for accomplishing the desired outcome?
- Is the project feasible and realistic?
- Is the proposed budget realistic?
