New Director for Center for International Programs
Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Frances Sweeney announced that Susie Miller Reid is the new director of the Center for International Programs. Susie was the unanimous choice of the search committee last spring to replace Maureen Little, who retired.Susie has more than 30 years of experience in international education, including inbound program development and implementation focusing on intensive English, American culture, pre-academic orientation for Fulbright Scholars and Humphrey Fellows, professional development for corporate and government employees, secondary and postsecondary EFL and ESP teacher training, and International Teaching Assistant preparation. She has developed and implemented teacher training programs in Egypt and Korea and has worked with a number of non-governmental organizations including the IIE, ACTR/ACCELS, World Learning, IREX, AED, and AMIDEAST administering programs sponsored by the U.S. State Department and Agency for International Development.
Susie has lived in Brazil and Kuwait and taught at Kuwait University in the mid-1980's. The majority of her professional career as an administrator has been at the University of California, Davis and Santa Cruz campuses, but she has also taught at Ohio University, Southern Illinois University and Rocky Mountain College. Throughout her career, Susie has been involved in TESOL and NAFSA, serving as regional or international chair of interest sections. She has been a regular presenter at TESOL, CATESOL and NAFSA: Association of International Educators conferences. Susie actually began her study abroad experience at the age of 16 when she was awarded a scholarship through Union Local High School and spent three months in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. To this day, she remains in close contact with her host family.
In addressing her reasons for wanting to join Saint Mary’s, Susie expressed her interest in working in a liberal arts, relationships-based learning community, related how impressed she was with the history of Lasallian education domestically and worldwide, and was enthusiastic about helping to strengthen the College’s commitment to internationalization at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
