About Saint Mary's College

Saint Mary's College of California, founded in 1863, is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the West. It is a private coeducational college owned and operated by the Christian Brothers, whose teaching traditions date back to the 17th century. A Roman Catholic institution, Saint Mary's College prides itself on its high academic and spiritual standards, open intellectual atmosphere, and dedication to the traditions of the liberal arts. The 420-acre campus is located in the picturesque Moraga Valley, 20 miles east of San Francisco.

The study of the intersection of corporate governance, fiduciary responsibility and sustainable economic development resonates with and is nourished by the long tradition of Catholic social thought generally, and of a Lasallian view specifically concerning both stewardship of resources, and concern for and sensitivity to issues of equitable development and justice. "A distinctive mark of a Lasallian school is its awareness of the consequences of economic and social injustice and its commitment to the poor. Its members learn to live their responsibility to share their goods and their service with those who are in need, a responsibility based on the union of all men and women in the world today..."
