2011

Professors Frances Sweeney and Phylis Martinelli as co-directors of the Center for First Generation to College Studies at Saint Mary’s College of California applied for a grant of $10,000 from the California Council for the Humanities California Story Fund to support the First to College Californians project. Grant funds would support the collection, editing, and sharing of stories of diverse Californians—across background factors such as age, ethnicity, gender, and geography—who were the first in their family to attain a college degree. The project’s three goals are:  1) to increase awareness of and engage in dialogue about the role of higher education in the lives of these Californians, especially as it relates to their democratic engagement in their communities and state; 2) to document and share the collegiate experiences of Californians who represent the first generation in their families to complete a baccalaureate degree; and 3) to promote higher education to potential first generation to college secondary students, especially those from marginalized groups.

A decision is expected in 2012.

The Oakland Tribune (April 8) - Saint Mary's project aims to put Oakland students' dreams into focus.

KGO AM Newstalk Radio (March 10) - 65 middle school students from Oakland got a taste of college life today, thanks to a new program at St. Mary's College that's designed to inspire a particular group of young people. KGO's Leslie Brinkley reports from Moraga.
