Excavation for the new pool at the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center will start May 12 and last about two weeks, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. No work will take place during the May 24-25 commencement weekend.

The excavated materials from the dig will be transported by truck to the borrow pit located at the east end of campus on the hillside behind McKeon Pavilion.

As in similar past operations, the truck drivers will adhere to the speed limit, pay close attention to traffic conditions, and make complete stops at all stop signs. C. Overaa & Co. will also have street sweepers operating to control dust and maintain the cleanliness of the truck route along De La Salle Drive.

Work allowed to begin at 7 a.m. on Friday January 24, 2014.

As part of the conditional use permit for the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center, the College was granted the ability to work occasional extended hours as deemed necessary by the College and with approval from the Town of Moraga planning staff. As such, the College has requested, and has been granted, approval to begin work at 7 a.m. on Friday, January 24. The reason for the early start is to allow for a beam signing ceremony and steel frame erection marking the midpoint of the construction project.

While the College has taken every precaution to minimize any backup bells or other noise that may come from the job site before 8 a.m., CAL OSHA requires all trucks to have their beepers enabled when in reverse. As a result of this safety requirement, there may be some noise. We apologize and will strive to keep this to a minimum during the 7-8 a.m. hour. Thank you for your patience as we move forward with this project.

Additionally, the College may need to have an early start on a few other mornings. We hope to keep this to a limited number of occasions. We would like to keep you informed of future dates via email. If you would like to be updated on the progress of this project, please email Tim Farley, Director of Community and Government Relations at tjf5@stmarys-ca.edu so  your name can be added to our roster for future updates.

Should you have any questions, you may contact Dale Jackson with C. Overaa & Co. at (510) 719-3933 for work hours, noise and dust complaints, or you may contact campus security at (925) 631-4282. You may also call the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD); this includes complaints about dust and idling trucks. Board of Trustees Approve Construction Contract for Joseph L. Alioto Recreation Center

The next phase of construction for the Joseph L. Alioto Recreation will commence in early September. On August 26, the College’s Board of Trustees approved a $23.5 million project budget for the construction of the center and awarded the construction contract to C. Overaa & Co. of Richmond, Calif. They also committed to continue fundraising efforts to fully fund the approved project budget. Funds raised to date equal 82% of the approved project budget, which exceeds the board’s policy threshold of 40% at the time of award of construction contracts.

The Joseph L. Alito Recreation Center will provide expanded recreational opportunities for the College community. The 60,000-square-foot building will house three gymnasiums, a large open area for cardio fitness equipment and free weights, three activity rooms, a climbing wall, snack bar and locker room facilities. The project also includes an outdoor aquatics center comprised of an 8,500 square foot surface area swimming pool and a 2,400 square foot surface area spa. Finally, the project includes a plaza area that connects the Recreation Center with Louis Guisto Baseball Field, Tim Korth Tennis Courts and Cottrell Softball Field.

Completion of the project is expected during spring semester 2015, although efforts will be made to advance the completion to the beginning of spring semester 2015.  Information about the construction of the project, including construction alerts and updates, can be found on this page.
