Throughout the academic year the Staff Council randomly selects a staff member to celebrate in our Spotlight on Staff. Our recipient for the month of December is Sue Peters, R.N., B.S.N.
Sue Peters, R.N., B.S.N.
Associate Director of the Health and Wellness Center
Sue began her college health nursing career in 1977 at the University of Michigan Health Center where she worked in the gynecology clinic. In 1984, she and her husband and two sons moved to Moraga. She began working at Saint Mary’s College in 1989 and has watched college health services grow over her years at SMC. She enjoys working with her coworkers at the Health and Wellness Center who she calls ‘great advocates for student health’ but her favorite thing is working with students and watching them mature as they learn to make healthy choices and lifestyle changes. Sue will be retiring from SMC in January after almost 25 years and the College will greatly miss her expertise, passion for helping students, and camaraderie.
How long have you been at Saint Mary’s?
I have been at SMC for 24+ years. I had worked in college health in Michigan so when I moved to Moraga I visited to the Health Center and met with the Director. After 3 years of persistence, I was hired one day a week and was soon increased to full time.
Tell us a little about your job.
I provide administrative and clinical services in the HWC. With the other RN’s, I triage students for our clinicians, give immunizations, perform lab work and provide health education to the students. I work with high risk students in the Center to be sure they are bridged to community resources and receive follow up care as necessary.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
Having worked in college health for 32 years, I have to say that working with the students is the best part of my job. They are generally healthy individuals and are away from home for the first time making decisions for themselves. They are eager to learn. I am able to educate students on ways to manage their own health and advocate for themselves for their health care needs.
What do you enjoy most about the SMC Community?
I feel privileged to work in such a beautiful and respectful community. I love the staff I work with in the HWC as they are so compassionate with the students and each other and passionate about their jobs. I enjoy the cultural and educations environment a college campus provides.
Outside of work, is there anything you'd like to share about your interests, hobbies, family, or volunteer work?
My plan is to retire in early 2014 and then I’ll see where life takes me. I want to travel in the US visit all the states I have not already seen. I have a wonderful husband who would like me to play golf so I’ll be giving that a try. I have a grandson locally and 2 grandchildren in Michigan and I plan to visit them more frequently. My family has a summer home in northern Michigan so I will be spending summers there with my sisters and extended family. My hobbies include walking, cooking and gardening so I will have more time to devote to them. I plan to stay at SMC as a per diem nurse so expect to see me around occasionally.
