Services for Michael E. Porcella ‘95, an attorney with a prominent East Bay criminal defense firm and the son of Saint Mary's faculty member Edward Porcella, have been set for Saturday, April, 25, at 12:30 p.m. in the Church of Saint Leo the Great in Oakland.
Tragically, Mr. Porcella, 36, was killed at his home in Oakland on April 10. Police have arrested the suspect in the crime.
An Integral major, Mr. Porcella graduated from Saint Mary's 14 years ago. The College has played a major role in shaping the academic direction of the Porcella family. His father Edward Porcella, '64, was an Integral major as well and has been a faculty member with Saint Mary's since 1978. Michael Porcella's sister, Julie Porcella Rolland, '91, is also an alumna of the College. Mr. Porcella is survived by his sister Julie and parents, Edward and Karen Porcella.
After graduating from Saint Mary's, Mr. Porcella went on to earn a law degree from Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco. He was admitted to the State Bar of California in 2006.
Mr. Porcella's choice of law as a profession resonated with Steve Cortright, one of the College's Integral professors. "The thought of Michael Porcella wielding an attorney's influence made for satisfaction, for he was a vir honestus. In that character, he was the heir and praise of his parents, a credit to the College and to the Integral curriculum, a valued colleague and the delight of his friends," said Cortright. "Our defense against the brutality with which his passing confronts us must be our prayerful solidarity with Ed, Karen, and Julie."
Following the April 25 service at Saint Leo the Great a Celebration of Life will be held at La Taza de Café, 3909 Grand Avenue, Oakland at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Mary's College, Integral Program, Box 4300, Moraga, CA 94575.
