Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Troy L. Nunley was nominated by President Barack Obama in June to serve as U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of California.
A White House press release announcing the nominations included a congratulatory statement from the Oval Office, “I am pleased to nominate these distinguished individuals to serve on the United States District Court bench,” said President Obama. “I am confident they will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice.”
Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who recommended Judge Nunley for the position, expressed her admiration for the SMC alumnus. “In addition to a decade as Superior Court judge in Sacramento, Judge Nunley brings with him a range of experience as a criminal prosecutor in two district attorney’s offices, as a deputy attorney general in the California Department of Justice and in private practice. I believe Judge Nunley will serve with distinction on the District Court,” she said.

Mikey, made the fateful decision at age 19 to try out for a beach soccer team in Santa Cruz, which led to tournament play around the U.S., the chance to play for the U.S. Beach Soccer Team in Rio Quente, Brazil, and an offer to play in Switzerland for three months in the summer. His success led to an offer from another Swiss team for the 2012 season; he now lives in Switzerland for three months out of the year. At home in the Bay Area, Mikey works as a personal trainer at Living Lean in Orinda and coaches soccer at De La Salle High School. He says his time in Switzerland has taught him about sports, life, culture, communications, relationships, himself and what he really wants and needs. He hopes beach soccer will take off like beach volleyball has and be included in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dinner With Mel was a special event. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon Gael alumnae gathered on the Moraga campus for a spring dinner with Brother Mel Anderson ’51, president of Saint Mary’s College of California from 1969 to 1997. Organized by Chris Major ’83 and Matt Carroll, Sodexo, the guest list featured Gael grads from the early 1980s to the late 1990s.
A group of passionate Gael grads, encompassing a diverse group of sociopolitical attitudes and generational perspectives, enjoyed a historical afternoon with Mel. The guest list included former basketball star Frank Knight ’99 and his wife, Dr. Allyson Knight, real estate guru Rick Rodriguez EE ’06 and his partner Lauren Roth, Anne (Leary) Herrera ’84, and John ’82 and Jeanne (Toomey) DeMatteo ’83.
Brother Mel’s memoirs, Years of Yearning, were available for purchase, but the beauty of “Dining with Brother Mel Anderson” is sharing in the spirit of a Catholic, Lasallian and liberal arts education so beneficial in our lives today.

Eduardo has been married for 26 years, has a daughter, Ashley, in grad school and lives in Monrovia, east of Pasadena. He was appointed to be a Los Angeles County deputy probation officer 1 - juvenile counselor in 1989 and promoted in 1993 to DPO II, a position which included performing street/school level special assignments in Los Angeles. In 1997, Eduardo was selected for the first “MS13” street level transitional gang task force. In 2000, he participated in a hemispheric transitional gang conference in El Salvador and was promoted to supervisor in 2003. He went to the Pasadena field office in 2006 and is currently assigned to a pilot project for the LA County Chief Executive Office called the Countywide Gang and Violence Reduction Initiative. Eduardo has been part of a team that reduced gang, hate and racial violence in four demonstration sites and accomplished this through community organizing, targeting high-risk juveniles and their families, and assisting with economic development. He is also the L.A. representative for the International Latino Gang Investigators Association, does training on the Central American gangs “MS13 & 18th St” and is a volunteer instructor for his department. Eduardo has also done classes and workshops in San Jose, Merced, Chico, Concord, Las Vegas, New Mexico, Colorado, Seattle and Kansas.

Vincent and Elizabeth Fortanasce welcomed their new baby girl, Ava Sophia Fortanasce, on May 9 during a lightening storm in Phoenix, Ariz. She weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces. Ava was born with long golden hair, her deep blue eyes wide open, looking around the room. She cried for five minutes, then heard her father’s voice, grabbed on to his hand, stopped crying and looked right into his eyes. It was a moment he will cherish forever. At four months old, she learned to smile her goofy toothless grin, to laugh and giggle, hold her bottle all by herself and has perfect health. They are planning a trip to New York soon to introduce her to the rest of the family. Go Gaels!

Megan received her Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Davis, on Nov. 9. Her dissertation work focused on the MUTYH gene, which has been linked to a familial form of colorectal cancer. Megan applied for, and was awarded, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) T32 training grant for a postdoctoral position in the Microbiology Department at UC Davis. Her postdoctoral research will focus on the tumor suppressor protein BRCA2, and she will be working under the guidance of nationally recognized Wolf-Dietrich Heyer, the leader of the Molecular Oncology Program at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. Megan plans to spend a few more years in training before starting her career in the field of cancer research.

Tony Shelton is a professor of entomology and international professor of agriculture at Cornell. He has been fortunate to work in dozens of countries on their food security issues. His most recent travels have included India, China, Tibet and Bangladesh (and New Zealand and Australia when it is freezing in upstate New York!). Last year he was elected a Fellow of the Entomological Society of America. More importantly, he is anticipating the birth of his first grandchild in August. As director of application development he was responsible for the implementation, enhancement and maintenance of all their PeopleSoft applications. Currently Paul does business, technology and project consulting and is a general partner with Global ProManagement, a private equity firm investing in international outsourcing businesses. Also passionate about sports, Paul has invested in the San Francisco Seals amateur soccer team and has season tickets to the Oakland Raiders and San Jose Earthquakes. Honored on June 8 at MPINCC’s annual gala, Darci is a senior conference manager for AAA Insurance Exchange in Walnut Creek. In addition to her involvement with MPINCC, Darci is also the Northern California Chapter president. Darci recently returned from Portugal, where she and her father visited the villages where her grandfather and maternal grandparents were from, researching their Portuguese ancestral roots.

She will begin as an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Albion College this fall.

Tony and Elizabeth White started this venture in October 2010 to provide St. Louis-area homeowners a resource for finding service contractors. White is also working on a similar publication for the Phoenix, Ariz., area.

Elianna (Psycharis) Reker MS ’02 announces that a few years after graduation, she returned to Saint Mary’s and received her MS in health services administration in 2002. She worked for many years with seniors in skilled nursing and as a geriatric care manager for home care. She married Nick Reker ’01 in 2005; they have two children. She now stays home to take care of Melina (2 1/2) and Evan (7 months). Her days are happy and exhausting!

Jennifer (Belloni) Winberry announces that after graduating from SMC, she went on to teach at Montessori de Terra Linda in Marin County, then taught first grade in Walnut Creek for 12 years. In July 2007, she married Matt Winbery in Lake Tahoe. She took the past year off to be with their daughter, Katelyn Elizabeth, who was born Aug. 18, 2010. She will return to teaching fifth grade part-time in the fall. She and Matt feel so blessed and love every minute with their daughter.

He resides in Brisbane, near San Francisco, with his wife, Olivia, and their small dog, Jojo.

Christopher Walton MBA is wrapping up his first tour as a State Department Foreign Service Officer in Nairobi, Kenya, where he served in the economic section of the embassy. His four children, three girls and one boy, have completed their first experience living in Africa with great aplomb and are looking forward to a school year in Northern Virginia before their first European experience.

Janis and Frank met while teaching at Saint Mary’s School in Walnut Creek. She was the science teacher and Frank is the current math teacher. She is busy with wedding planning and her new job as principal of St. Philip Neri in Alameda. Frank runs ASA (Advanced Skills Academy) Basketball, a large AAU basketball program for boys and girls grades 5–9, while coaching basketball at De La Salle High School.

Barbara McLaughlin, EdD and family recently spent a month in England, Ireland and Scotland. They began in London, visiting family in Falmouth, Hornchurch and Watford. They were in Dublin at the same time as Queen Elizabeth but did not see her. However, their bus tours were hampered, their luggage was checked by security before they could walk to their hotel on McConnell Street and they encountered mainly peaceful demonstrations. Back in Scotland, they visited St. Andrews University, where William and Kate met, and walked the Old Course and got their photos taken on the bridge.
