All-time men's basketball leading scorer Daniel Kickert, who graduated in 2006, has signed a professional contract to play for the club Livorno of the Italian A-1 league. Kickert, who played in a school record 122 games, helped lead SMC to the NCAA Tournament in 2004, the first for Saint Mary's since the 1996-97 season. Over the summer, he played for Australia in the FIBA World Basketball Championships in Japan.

Former point guard E.J. Rowland is in his first season with the Sydney Kings of the Australian Pro League. Rowland, a 2005 graduate and point guard of the 2005 Saint Mary's NCAA Tournament team, helped the Kings to a big win with 30 points against the New Zealand Breakers.

Former Gael baseball player and current Kansas City Royal Mark Teahen was named the American League Player of the Week for his stellar play the week of July 30, when he batted .400 and slugged .900, hitting a double and three homers. He ended the season with a .290 average and 18 home runs.

Numerous SMC standouts played in minor league baseball in summer 2006, including Matt Yourkin '03, Nick Conte, Brett Wayne '02, Bryan Byrne '05, Mike Sansoe '05, Corey Madden, Joel Fountain '06 and Sam Carter '05.
