The Mens Water Polo Team made their way to Santa Cruz on Oct. 13-14 for a tournament that included the likes of Stanford, UCSC, UC Berkeley, and CSU Maritime.
Saturday saw the Gaels start off the tournament with a win over Stanford in the opening game, 9-6. Junior standout Zack Roberts led the way for SMC with a whopping 8 goals against the Cardinal, along with veteran Goalie Ian Perelius blocking 10 shots.
The Gaels did not fare as well against the tournament-hosting Banana Slugs in their second game, which ended in a 16-6 loss. The scoring was distributed evenly as Scott Milne, Zack Roberts, and Lucas Federle each contributed 2 goals, and Perelius came up with a massive 18 blocks, but the firepower of the Slugs was too much.
Sunday saw SMC face off against the undefeated powerhouse of the Sierra Pacific Division--CSU Maritime, in which the underdog Gaels held their own, but ultimately came up a bit short, losing 15-12. Lucas Federle, a promising sophomore transfer, led the way with 4 goals for the Gaels, and Ian Perelius had himself another solid game in goal with 14 blocks.
With an 8-13 loss against Chico State, the Gaels finished the tournament with a 1-3 record, but the team continues to make strong progress, and they go into the Sierra Pacific Championship Tournament (Oct. 27-28 @ UCSC) as the #7 seed. They hope to knock off the #2-seeded Cal Golden Bears in the first round.
