November 15, 2009-- Saint Mary's Rugby traveled to Los Angeles this past weekend to kickoff their 2009-2010 campaign.
On Saturday, the Gaels traveled to Santa Monica to play the Santa Monica Men’s Rugby Club. In what was a very tough match, Saint Mary's fought their way to a 37-7 win over Santa Monica. Great performances were seen by Andrew Cook, Brandon Vedder, and Nick Wallace.
Later in the day, the Saint Mary's 2nd side and 3rd side faced Loyola Marymount University. On the 2nd side, the Gaels fell short by a try to lose 27-19. For the 3rd side, the Gaels were able to come out victorious against the Lions.
On Sunday the Gaels traveled to Newport Beach to play Back Bay Men’s Rugby Club. In a slow start, the Gaels fought hard to come back and gain the lead at the half 19-14. In the second half Back Bay came back, but Chad Clark was able to seal the win for the Gaels as he found the corner of the try zone. Saint Mary's won 31-24.
Later in the day, the Saint Mary's 2nd side and 3rd side faced Long Beach State University. The 2nd side team had a big win in an unanswered 22-0 scoring streak in the second half of the game. The 3rd side fell short by a try to lose against Long Beach State's 2nd side.
Next weekend the Saint Mary's Rugby team will host their annual Pat Vincent Cup in honor of the late coach Pat Vincent. The tournament will be held on Saturday, November 21st and Sunday, November 22nd. Be sure to stop by and see the Gaels in action.
