12/10/2012, Moraga, Calif.-Although the Gaels were down 13-0 at the 18 minute mark, Saint Mary's turned up some fantastic rugby in Saturday's Gaels vs. Diablo Gaels game. With a final score of 54-28 in favor of SMC, fans saw fantastic performances from talented returning and first year players. Mike Haley launched the Gael's come back with a 60 meter run, for a try. Joey Reavey successfully converted the try for the Gaels. On the ensuing kick-off, Nick Wallace, fresh off three weeks of Eagle workouts, caught the kick-off and returned it 75 meters for a try. Tim Maupin nearly duplicated the feat with a 75 meter return of a kick, leading to a try by Reavey. With 10 minutes to go in the half it was the Gaels 14, Diablo 13.
Following great runs by Nick Schlobohm , Kelly Harris and Wallace, Garrett Brewer capped it off at the five minute mark with a 74 meter on a break and pass from Mike Haley, winding up untouched in the goal. A successful conversion brought the score up to 28-13. Tim Maupin then went 80 meters, through the whole Diablo team, eluding tacklers and straight arming the fullback for a memorable try, making It 33-13 at the half.
More of the same in the second half, started by another Nick Wallace breakaway try, leaving would be tacklers trying to decide how to take him down. Brewer converted that try to the uprights, for a score of 40 to 13 at the 31st minute.
Jamie Borup, healthy again and playing broke away for a 45meter run and try, and Holden Youngert converted for the Gaels. A final try for Hulu Moungaloa capped the day, on a pass from Borup. Youngert made a successful conversion for the Gaels, for a final score of Gaels 54 Diablo 28.
Gaels C Side handled Diablo B side 34 -7 in the opener. Gaels B Side dominated San Jose State’s A Side, 51-11
