MORAGA – The SMC Women’s Club Volleyball team participated in the Crossover Tournament this past weekend and fought hard, winning one of the four matches against tough competitors. Despite their losses, the team played well at the February 18th tournament at the University of the Pacific.
The Gaels bravely faced an unsuspected turn of events, when their head coach, Jared Luquet was unable to attend the tournament. “We weren’t as focused,” sophomore, Mallory Zaunius said about playing against the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, without their coach on the sidelines.
Despite the nervous energy, and with the help of their Assistant Coach, Chris Covar, the SMC Women’s Club Volleyball team played well, beating SJSU in their third match, with the help of Kendall Carroll and her game winning kill shot to left front.
“USF was a team we never played before, and they’re a hard team to beat,” Zaunius said. In their fourth match against Cal Poly SLO, the top team in their division, senior, Laura Hanson made three kills, sophomore, Mallory Zaunius had three aces, and freshman, Kendall Carroll finished with four kills.
“We need more team bonding,” Zaunius said. With four returners on the team, team bonded is needed for a connection on and off the court, and more wins.
Next weekend, the Gaels will participate in the Far Western tournament in Davis, Saturday and Sunday. This tournament will bring even more competition, as the girls will face teams from different states.
