When Life University won the National Collegiate 7’s Championship over Central Washington in overtime, Gaels fans and supporters could not ignore that the SMC showing at nationals was of a championship caliber.
After Day 1, the Gaels were among the unbeaten teams that included Life University, Arkansas State and Kutztown.
On Saturday morning, when Rugbymag.com posted total points scored by individual players, it was Saint Mary's Bubba Jones who was in the second spot, one point behind the leader, Danie Swanepoel of Arkansas State who has 32 points.
The Gaels finished with a 5-1 tournament record, (losing to only to Central Washington), and placed 5th in the 24 team Tournament. Kingsley McGowan made the All-Tournament Team. To quote RugbyMag USA,
“Kingsley McGowan makes the cut despite going down with injury in the Gaels’ Cup Quarterfinal loss to Central Washington. Outside of CW’s Stanfill (Tournament MVP), McGowan was the scariest wing in the event. He had a ton of pace and turned it into five tries."
