The Comprehensive Keith: A Centennial Tribute
Sunday, October 2 - Sunday, December 18, 2011
Nearly 150 paintings representing Keith's active painting years, 1867 to 1909, including recent acquisitions and works not on view for more than a decade. A number of the paintings and original gilded frames have been restored for the exhibtion. Highlights include early paintings of the Pacific Northwest and Mt. Tamalpais, High Sierra scenes painted after sketching excursions with John Muir, Alaska glaciers, Mt. Shasta views, oak-studded Bay Area pastorals, and rarely seen portraits. From his San Francisco studio: his favorite desk, a gift from the California Historical Society, and a Japanese bell said to have inspired him to paint, on loan from the Swedenborg Church of San Francisco.
Opening Day Keynote address by Dr. Kevin Starr, 2 pm, Oct. 2, LeFevre Theatre
