Saint Mary's College Of California

Athletic Giving

Saint Mary's College student-athletes have been excelling in the classroom and competitively for more than 100 years. The College's rich athletic tradition can be traced back to turn of the 20th century when the Saint Mary's baseball program was one of the best in the country. The football teams of the 1920-40's made Saint Mary's College a nationally recognizable name with appearances in the Cotton Bowl and Oil Bowl.

When the West Coast Conference announced its top 50 athletes of the past 50 years, Saint Mary's was proud to place four alumni on the list including Anja Bordt and Tracy Johnston (Morris) from women's basketball, Tom Meschery from men's basketball, and Tom Candiotti from baseball.

Saint Mary’s College enjoys a long and rich tradition of academic achievement among its athletic programs. Never has this been more apparent than in the 2006-07 academic year as 16 Gael student-athletes were named to West Coast Conference All-Academic Teams and 160 student-athletes earned scholar-athlete status (minimum 3.10 GPA). With an excess of 300 student-athletes on campus last year, 44 percent earned scholar-athlete status and 24 percent made the Dean's List (minimum 3.50 GPA). All told, over 61 percent of Gael student-athletes earned a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.

Our coaches and student-athletes rely upon the generosity of the many individuals and friends who support Saint Mary's College athletic programs. We would like to once again thank the 2006-2007 donors who helped support the Gael Athletic Scholarship Fund and our athletic programs during the past year.
