campus architectural heritage
The white stucco walls, deep-set windows and doors, and the clay tile roofs of the New Filippi Academic Hall flow from the campus' Spanish Colonial architectural heritage. The overall massing and proportions of the building are well coordinated with the surrounding buildings and serve to anchor the western corner of the campus. The classic eave lines of the roof and the hierarchy of wall openings on the building further enhance the contextual feel of the building design.
The main entry is understated, yet respectful of the adjacent side entry to the historic Augustine Hall. The design incorporates traditional balcony elements and ornamental relief surrounding the windows above the deeply set entry portal. Ornamentation throughout the exterior facades is simple and understated: grilles, cornices, decorative trims and medallions all reflect the traditional character of the Saint Mary's campus. To accommodate the modern day need for mechanical systems, the central roof area conceals and equipment well which houses the primary mechanical units serving the building. Landscaping and lighting have been designed to both enhance the building design and to continue the fabric already established on campus.
