interior design
The interiors of the building have been crafted to reflect the traditions of the original academic spaces on campus yet clearly identify themselves as current and forward-looking spaces for learning in the 21st century. High ceilings in the public and teaching spaces accept natural daylight deep into the perimeter rooms. Internal spaces benefit from this same natural daylight through the use of secondary windows, or re-lites.
A palette of finishes, tested over time, includes the use of stained concrete floors, wood trim and paneling, and wood doors and casework. These concepts set the tone for durable environments expected for long-term service to Saint Mary's College. Ceiling and wall details, wood trim profiles, and light fixtures all contribute to a connection between the beauty laid out in the past and the academic mission of tomorrow.
Finally, the project design reflects a commitment to sustainable design in its use of materials and products classified as friendly to the environment. In addition, the siting and orientation of the building are designed to take best advantage of views and minimize heat exposure, and energy efficient design of the building skin, including thermal tinted windows and increased exterior wall thickness, minimizing the building's impact on resources.
