The men’s rugby team was knocked out of the Round of Sixteen in April by Army, which beat the Gaels 33–26 at Life University in Atlanta. The Gaels ended their 2008–09 season with a record of 21–2–1.
The Saint Mary’s women’s rowing team has had six rowers named 2009 National Scholar Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. The list includes Michelle Burns, Whitney Medved, Sandra Pichelli, Miranda Ripoli, Johanna Timmer and Sierra Timmer. Of the six rowers, four are two-time National Scholar Athletes.
Saint Mary’s lacrosse garnered six All-Academic selections from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation — Abbie Coleman, Amy Daniels, Dana Elfvin, P.J. Hainley, Lauren Lahey and Abby Morgan.
Former men’s soccer defender Corey Heldreth has signed to play for the Carolina Gigantes, one of eight teams in the Puerto Rican Soccer League. The PRSL is in its second season and features eight teams, and is the first unified soccer league on Puerto Rico.
The 2009 SMC women’s soccer season kicks off Aug. 21 against the Pacific Tigers in Stockton. After playing in the DU Invitation in Denver on Aug. 28 and 30, SMC will compete in the California Invitational on Sept. 4 and 6. The Gaels will host Texas A&M on Sept. 6 at 9:30 a.m. for the 2009 home opener.
Men’s soccer starts its 2009 season on Aug. 25 in Palo Alto for an exhibition game against Stanford. The Gaels will play their home opener against Sacramento State on Sept. 1.
Former Gaels basketball player David Carter ’89 became the University of Nevada, Reno’s new head basketball coach in May.
Carl Reed ’94 became the first director of athletics for CSU, Channel Islands, in May.
