The men’s rugby team finished 17–3 this spring, advancing to the Collegiate Men’s Division I National Quarterfinals in Pennsylvania. Americanrugbynews.com ranked the Gaels fifth in its final 2007 national poll and named head coach Tim O’Brien Coach of the Year.
The NCAA recognized the Saint Mary’s women’s tennis, basketball and soccer teams for academic excellence during the 2003–2006 school years. Each of these three teams posted Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the top 10 percent of all NCAA squads in their respective sports.
Seven Gaels were named to all-league first teams in the spring: Mike McRae and Robert McRae (men’s golf), Aude Lambert and Jessica Hoath (women’s tennis), Andre Sion (men’s tennis) and Lauren Mello and Bronwyn Russell (softball). Women’s tennis coach Lisa Alipaz, men’s tennis coach Michael Wayman and men’s golf coach Scott Hardy received WCC Coach of the Year awards.
Saint Mary’s senior outfielder Eric Cattoni was one of 10 national finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Baseball Award, which recognizes the nation’s most outstanding senior baseball student-athlete. Named to ESPN the Magazine’s Academic All-America Second Team, Cattoni maintained a straight-A average while taking pre-med courses.
Saint Mary’s softball second baseman Bronwyn Russell was selected to ESPN the Magazine’s All-Academic Team for the Western region. She has a 3.9 GPA in health sciences and will return to Saint Mary’s for her senior season.

Nearly 100 SMC student-athletes participated in “Moraga Beautiful,” a community clean-up campaign on May 12. Members of eight teams helped beautify Moraga Commons and Rancho Laguna Park.
