Supporters of the men’s basketball team broke the McKeon Pavilion single-season attendance record during the 2006–2007 season. A total of 42,065 fans cheered on the Gaels at their 16 home games, including sellout crowds for games against rivals Santa Clara and Pepperdine, and for the thrilling Jan. 15 victory over Gonzaga. Single-season attendance has increased by more than 150 percent during Randy Bennett’s tenure as coach.

Senior Eric Cattoni, a fleet-footed outfielder and a straight-A student, received the CRC Press Chemistry Achievement Award. On the field, Cattoni led the team in 2006 with 30 walks, 17 stolen bases and 16 doubles. After his baseball career, he plans to attend medical or graduate school.

The renovated Patrick Vincent Memorial Rugby Field reopened on Feb. 17. Players from previous SMC rugby teams were heavily involved in raising $500,000 for the project, helping to convert the pitch into one of the best playing surfaces in Northern California. This year’s team reached the national semifinals before falling to No. 4-ranked Navy.

SMC Hall of Fame pitcher Jeff Peterson ’84 passed away on Feb. 4. Peterson, a lanky southpaw who graduated with a degree in business administration, was a 1982 Sporting News All-American and is still the school’s all-time strikeout leader.
