Your frequently asked questions, answered!

1. Can I start attending classes before summer classes begin?
Yes, you can begin with a fall evening class.  The curriculum will be customized for you if this is the case.  A meeting with the director will be required to make these changes.

2. Do I need to take the GRE (Graduate Record Exam)?
No.

3. When is the application deadline?
There is no official deadline, we have a rolling admissions policy. We maintain a maximum annual cohort size of 22. Additional applications roll over to the next year.

4. When will I know if I've been accepted?
Your application is not reviewed until your file is complete (with a goal statement, 3 letters of recommendation and official transcripts). Once your file is complete, your application will be reviewed by the Director and you will be notified shortly thereafter.

5. How long will it take to finish the program?
Most students start in June and finish either 14 or 25 months later.

6. Can I write a thesis?
If you choose the 14 month, year-round option, there is not enough time to complete a thesis.  If you choose the 25 month option and do exceptional work in the Introduction to Research (Kinesiology 300) class, the faculty may approve a topic for research and a thesis.  Approval is not automatic.

7. Can I transfer graduate courses from another institution?
A maximum of 6 units can be transferred. The units must have been completed within the past 5 years and must not have been used as a part of any other awarded degree. They must be graduate level and Kinesiology-related.  You must have achieved an A or B grade to transfer a class.  Prior approval is required to transfer.

8. Is financial aid available?
Yes, contact our Financial Aid office at (925) 631-4370.

9. Are there graduate assistantships available?
Two to three graduate assistantships are available as a part of our collaboration with the Department of Recreational Sports at UC Berkeley.  These are half-time paid positions at UCB.  To qualify for these GA positions, prospective students must be selected/hired by the department at UCB.  A few additional GA positions are sometimes available through the SMC Athletic Department. To qualify, prospective students must be hired by the Athletic Department.  One other GA position is available each year to oversee the departmental website. Interested students should contact the graduate Kinesiology Director.

10. Who should apply?
Many of our students are coaches and use the degree to advance their careers, but we attract students with all kinds of interests and career goals. Our graduates teach physical education in public and private schools, enter doctoral programs in kinesiology, join the fitness industry, work in parks and recreation departments, and in management positions within the Sport Business industry.

11. Should I apply if I don't meet all the admission criteria?
Every applicant will be considered. We review each application on its merits and pay particular attention to potential for success, not just traditional measures of past performance. We look for motivated students who want to learn and make a difference in the lives of others.

12. Is the Graduate & Professional Student Handbook online? Yes, click here to access the Handbook.

13. Are internships available?
Yes. Many of our students in sport management and fitness management do part of their curriculum in internships with local sport agencies. We have excellent relationships with high schools, colleges, and professional sport agencies.

14. Is there flexibility in the program?
Yes. This is one of our strengths. All students must take five core classes (Kines 300, Kines 305, Kines 320, Kines 330, and Kines 370). Other course work (internships and independent study) may be substituted for many of the other courses in the curriculum.  Each student meets with the Director to customize the curriculum to meet professional need.
