Are you interested in starting a new project, learning some home renovation skills, or just helping a family in need? In collaboration with Habitat for Humanity East Bay, we invite you to join us for a build in Bay Point on Saturday, October 20, 2012.
Date: Saturday, October 20th, 2012
Time: 8:30am until 4pm. (Full day requested, please). Habitat for Humanity construction staff will greet everybody as they arrive and help them sign in and make a nametag. When everybody has arrived we will lead a short orientation to discuss safety and the day's tasks. After the morning orientation, volunteers may be asked to travel to a different rehab home in the nearby vicinity. Volunteers will be divided into smaller crews and be assigned to a Habitat crew leader, who will offer instruction and supervision. Then we'll get to work! We'll break for a 30-45 minute lunch at noon, and then work through the afternoon. Please stay through clean-up.
Location: Bay Point Home Renovation – 39 Lakeview Drive, Bay Point, CA 94565
Estimated Work: All sorts of work takes place on a Habitat construction site. Please be prepared to assist in whatever the day's tasks may be and remember to be flexible and patient. Every job helps to build homes! Some tasks may involve operating power tools or working at heights on scaffolding or ladders. Volunteers will not be asked to do any tasks that make them uncomfortable.
Clothes: Please wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty, painted, or ruined. Most volunteers wear sneakers, jeans or shorts, an old t-shirt, and a sweatshirt. Layer for the weather and bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to stay protected from the sun. Saint Mary's will provide volunteer shirts.
Your Health and Comfort: Please keep in mind that you will be on your feet for most of the day, in potentially hot, cold, or wet conditions. Please take as many breaks as you need to stay healthy, and avoid over-extending yourself. Even on mild days, the effects of the sun can be very significant, because the construction site affords little shade and many of the surfaces reflect light and heat. Do bring a hat and sunglasses, and bring a refillable water bottle in order to stay hydrated. Do not be shy about taking breaks to sit and rest in the shade. Take good care of yourself, and encourage others on your crew to do the same.
Rain: For safety reasons, we will close the site in the event of heavy rain. Call 510-251-6304 and please follow prompt 7 after 7am on the morning of your build day. If the site will be closed due to rain, the message will say so. If the message makes no mention of rain, assume the site is open. If your build day is canceled due to rain we will make every effort to reschedule as soon as possible.
Youth: For safety reasons, all volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers younger than 18 must bring a signed minor waiver form with them to the build day. Minor waiver forms are available on our website at http://www.habitateb.org/assets/files/minor_waiver(1).pdf. Minors may not operate power tools or work at heights above six feet.
Lunch: Please bring a bag lunch with you on your workday. We have benches and tables, and we can all eat together on the site. We will have jugs of tap water available, and we recommend bringing refillable water bottles.
Facilities: Portable toilets are located on site, as well as a hand-washing station. Indoor plumbing will not be available.
Tools: All hand and power tools and safety equipment, including hardhats, goggles, and gloves, will be provided. You may bring your own hand tools if you would prefer to use them, but be sure to label them with your name.
