UNDERGRADUATE SPRING RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM 2012

This year, Saint Mary's Spring Symposium is on Wednesday, May 2nd, from 12:40-2:10.

The Spring Symposium is an opportunity for all students across disciplines to showcase the research you have conducted over the last year in classes, during summer research, and independently. In past years we have had a diverse representation from Mathematics, Biology, Communication, Business, English, Psychology, and more. This year we expect an even greater representation of the high-caliber student work being conducted across campus.

The submission process is now open. The deadline to submit your presentation proposal is Monday, April 23rd.

As in previous years, Spring Symposium is brought to you by the Honors Program, and OPEN TO THE ENTIRE UNDERGRADUATE COMMUNITY. We hope this will be an opportunity for all students to showcase their growing body of scholarly work.

Questions can be directed to Juliet Kinkade.

HONORS PROGRAM LECTURE SERIES

Join us every Tuesday night in Hagerty Lounge at 5:30.

Apr. 17       SMC Librarian and master of horror Norm Partridge joins us to talk about things that go bump in the night, and what really scares the daylights out of him.

The most frequent question horror writers are asked is: “Where do you get your ideas?” Second to that is: “Why do you write horror stories?” Writer Norman Partridge takes on both these questions as a guest for the Honors Lecture Series on Tuesday, April 17th at 5:30 p.m. In "American Frankenstein: Building a Horror Writer," Partridge will talk about growing up in the epic days of sixties/seventies monster-culture, describing how the influences of pulp fiction, comics, and B-movies shaped him as a storyteller.

Publishers Weekly called Norman Partridge’s Dark Harvest “contemporary American writing at its finest,” and chose the novel as one of the 100 Best Books of 2006. His fiction includes horror, suspense, crime, and the fantastic—“sometimes all in one story,” says his friend writer Joe R. Lansdale. Author of five short story collections, Partridge’s novels include the Jack Baddalach mysteries Saguaro Riptide and The Ten-Ounce Siesta, plus The Crow: Wicked Prayer, which was adapted for film. Partridge’s compact, thrill-a-minute style has been praised by Stephen King and Peter Straub, and his work has received multiple Bram Stoker awards.

Apr. 24       Ted Tsukahara closes our semester with a great lecture on Intellectual Archaeology, the search for Economic Man, and other adventures.

POSTSECRET PANEL

Apr. 25      Soda Center      7PM

Have a secret you wish you had someone to tell?

Have a postcard going to waste because you have no one to send it to?

Looking for a great way to spend your Wednesday night?

If any of these sound like you, join us for PostSecret. Students will be discussing the website dedicated to keeping your secrets (postsecret.com), and inviting experts in the community to talk about the mental health risks of keeping a painful secret to yourself, and the benefits of sharing your secrets with someone else, even if that someone else is someone you'll never meet. We will also be making postcards to send to PostSecret.

And keep an eye open around campus for great artwork inspired by PostSecret in the days leading up to the event!
