Brother Jerome Gallegos FSC '61
Brother Jerome Gallegos ‘61, a Christian Brother for more than 50 years who held leadership positions at several Brothers' high schools in California, died at Mont La Salle on Oct. 17, 2008, following an extended illness.
Brother Jerome entered the junior novitiate in 1954 after attending Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, and he received the habit of the Christian Brothers in 1956. After receiving bachelor's and master's degrees from Saint Mary's, he taught at Saint Mary's College High School in Berkeley, Bishop Armstrong High School in Sacramento and Garces Memorial High School in Bakersfield.
During the 1980s, Brother Jerome was principal of Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento and De La Salle High School in Concord; his time at De La Salle came during one of the school's football winning streaks.
Brother Jerome later served as principal of his alma mater, Cathedral High in Los Angeles.
"He was a very happy and extremely energetic person," says Brother Michael Meister, who preceded Brother Jerome as principal of De La Salle. "He loved the kids and was like an older brother to them."
Brother Jerome is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Larry Wade, and his sister, Emma Savala. He is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews, eight grandnephews and four grandnieces.
