Brother Raymond Charles Berta, FSC, long time member of the faculty of Saint Mary's College and Professor in the Department of Communication, passed away at the Christian Brothers retirement facility in Napa on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004. Almost three years ago, Brother Ray became very seriously ill and never fully recovered. He was devoted to his students, to his teaching, and to the College. We are grateful for his life among us and for all the young lives he touched as a Brother.

Brother Ray was born on Nov. 26, 1940, in Ottawa, Illinois, the son of Raymond Joseph Berta and Evelyn Marie Hertzner. He entered the Novitiate on June 16, 1959. He received the religious habit on Aug. 30, 1959. He made his perpetual vows on July 16, 1965, at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois. Brother Raymond is survived by his brother, James Berta, San Diego, California, his sister, Joanne Rosencrans, and nieces and nephews.

* July 1981 - St. Patrick's Seminary, Palo Alto, California, Study Stanford University
* July 1985 - Saint Mary's College, Moraga, California, Studies / Teacher
* July 1987 - Serra High School Faculty House, Study Stanford University
* July 1992 - Saint Mary's College, Moraga, California, Associate Professor, Complete Study at Stanford University
* July 1993 - Saint Mary's College, Moraga, California, Associate Professor
* October 1996 - Transferred from Midwest District

* July 2000 - Saint Mary's College, Moraga, California, Associate Professor
* July 2002 - Holy Family Community

The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, Nov. 27, at Mont La Salle in Napa with interment immediately following the liturgy.
