Does learning a foreign language at a high level of fluency and living abroad appeal to you? Do you have a passion for the culture, politics, art, and society of another major region in the world? If so, the International Area Studies major program of study could be for you!
International Area Studies is a multidisciplinary major program that allows the student to concentrate their studies on a specific geographical region of the world. The program integrates several academic disciplines, language proficiency, cultural literacy, and residential experience abroad.
Our students have a sense of adventure, an inquiring mind and the desire to experience foreign cultures. Immersion in another culture expands your understanding of the human experience and permanently enriches your life. In addiiton, in today's globalizing world, experience living abroad is a key asset if not prerequisite for many jobs.
"It's the perfect major: You get to dabble in various subjects and figure out where you want to take the knowledge you have acquired." Karina Becerra, IAS and Spanish Major "Immersing myself in a culture other than my own was like growing up and learning how to live all over again from a different perspective." Eric Holman, IAS and Spanish Major "We have the most diverse (ethnically/background) professors and courses. This allows us to get an extremely well-rounded education and view of the world." Kathryn Baldwin, IAS and Spanish Major "Seeing a way of living life that is completely unique to itself make me appreciate/realize all the things I have in the USA." Eric Holman, IAS and Spanish Major
