Come and enjoy a high-powered evening of drama, music and movement. Having earned rave reviews in San Francisco, veteran performer Joe Orrach, a Saint Mary’s College Liberal Education for Arts Professionals (LEAP) program graduate, brings his autobiographical solo show IN MY CORNER to Saint Mary’s College on September 22, 8 PM in LeFevre Theatre.
IN MY CORNER is the tale of a Puerto Rican / Italian kid growing up in a family dominated by a violent ex-boxer father. His coming of age story is one in which he makes his way out of chaos and violence through his discovery of dance (he is an incredible tapper!). Orrach’s fast-paced narrative riffs shift seamlessly into boxing sequences and driving tap dance numbers. This moving and transformative work delivers a powerful punch guaranteed to leave audiences breathless. Born into a family dominated by a line of Puerto Rican boxers and sweetened by Italian food, gesture and song, Joe, described as "a consummate showman and vulnerable, soul-bearing soloist" by the SF Bay Guardian, tells his energetic story to the accompaniment of a jazz ensemble , led by musical director and world class pianist Matthew Clark. This dramatic solo performance, fun and full of life, comes to Saint Mary’s after sold-out runs in San Francisco.
Actor, performer, dancer, singer and US Air Force welterweight boxing champion, Joe Orrach has performed worldwide on stage, television and in motion picture features. Joe started on the streets of New York City, at 72nd and Broadway, where Gregory Hines found him two decades ago. Joe has performed with Gregory Hines, Savion Glover and has appeared in films by Woody Allen, James Mangold and others. California audiences had the pleasure of seeing Joe as one of the “power acts” at San Francisco’s Teatro Zinzanni from 2000 to 2006.
$15 general admission; $10 Seniors (65+) and non-SMC students and $5 for Saint Mary’s faculty, staff and students. Please call (925) 631-4670 for reservations.
