Dr. Clifford Lee selected as CNV fellow

Dr. Clifford Lee was recently selected as a fellow in the 2014-2016 Cultivating New Voices (CNV) Among Scholars of Color program with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).  This unique two-year mentoring program supports advanced doctoral students and junior scholars with professional, intellectual, and activist work of scholars of color by pairing each fellow with a senior scholar in the field (i.e.g, education/teacher education; language; literacy, and cultural studies; English).  Dr. Lee will be working with Dr. Eva Lam, an Associate Professor at Northwestern University who specializes in the area of language, literacy, and diversity in education.  See the 2014-2016 CNV cohort here.

Educational Leadership Students Present Research Projects

Doctoral students from Cohort 11 in the Educational Leadership Program (Ed.D.) presented research projects at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the inaugural meeting of the Action Research Network of the America (ARNA).

Early Childhood Student Rocio Garcia Daza Awarded Teacher Education Scholarship

The American Montessori Society (AMS) awarded Teacher Education Scholarship to Rocio Garcia Daza to support the Early Childhood Studies.  The Scholarship is awarded in honor of AMS 2013 Living Legacy - Joyce Pickering.

Dr. Rebecca Proehl Awarded 2013 Faculty Fellowship Grant

Dr. Rebecca Proehl was awarded a 2013 Faculty Fellowship Grant to support her research project entitled Catalyst Schools: A Faith Inspired Public School Option.

Dr. Suzy Thomas Inducted Into the Hall of Fame!

Dr. Suzy Thomas (Associate Professor, Graduate Counseling Program) will be inducted into the H.B. McDaniel Hall of Fame at Stanford University for her contributions to School Counseling.

Educational Leadership student Toni Battle invited to participate with The Slave Dwelling Project

In collaboration with The Slave Dwelling Project, Toni Battle, Ed.D. student and founder of The Legacy Project, a youth culture enrichment program, will travel to Ossabaw Island off the coast of Georgia and stay at an existing slave cabin. While there, Battle will be conducting historical dialogue within the community about preserving the dwellings as historical landmarks and discussing the untold stories of the enslaved.

Recent Ed.D. Graduate Presents at Conference

Dr. Tekakwitha M. Pernambuco-Wise (Ed.D. '11) presented at the Annual Conference of the National Association of Principals for Girls Schools. Her presentation was based on the findings from her dissertation entitled Private-Independent School Headship for Women: A Grounded Theory Study.

Dr. Suzy Thomas Helps Launch the Action Research Network of the Americas (ARNA) Conference

Congratulations to Dr. Suzy Thomas on the inaugural launch of the Action Research Network of the Americas (ARNA) Conference on May 1-2 in San Francisco. Suzy, who served on the planning committee for this new group, reported ARNA’s focus is on action research as a tool for social justice in educational and community settings, and that the conference, sponsored by the KSOE, will be international and mostly bilingual. Dr. Gloria Sosa will be translating the keynote address, KSOE student volunteers will help with logistics, and proposals submitted by Drs. Jenny Maguire, Kathy Perez, Heidimarie Rambo, Rebecca Proehl, Sawako Suzuki, and Suzy will be presented at the conference.

Drs. Kathy Perez and Heidimarie Rambo, along with Ed.D student Margaret Coughlan, were selected to present at the First Annual Action Research Network of the Americas (ARNA) Conference in San Francisco this May. Their session will focus on the Action Research process in the MATL Program.

Dr. Gloria Sosa invited to participate in the 2013 Social Justice Leadership Development Project

Dr. Gloria Sosa has been invited to represent the Association for Humanistic Counselors at the 2013 Social Justice Leadership Development Project, part of the American Counseling Association’s Annual Conference this spring. While there, Dr. Sosa will work with nationally prominent leaders in the field of counseling as they strive to develop Social Justice Advocacy as the "Fifth Force" in the counseling profession.

Dr. Gloria Sosa Selected as Counseling Journal's Distinguished Reviewer for 2012-13!

Dr. Gloria Sosa was selected as the Journal of Humanistic Counseling (JHC)'s Distinguished Reviewer for 2012-2013. She has been a reviewer for JHC since 2009 and was recognized for her thought-provoking and helpful reviews. She will be receiving the award at the American Counseling Association National conference in March, 2013.

Dr. Sandra Mattar Presented at the 30th Annual Winter Roundtable

Dr. Mattar will present a paper: "Infusing Social Justice and Advocacy in Counseling Courses: Pedagogical Reflections." at the 30th Annual Winter Roundtable to be held at Teachers College, Columbia University (New York).

Dr. Sandra Mattar, Associate Dean, was recently interviewed on Univision for her expertise and recommendations for addressing issues of trauma and post traumatic stress disorder in educational institutions following the Sandy Hook Elementary school tragedy (more information in linked article).

Dr. Gloria Sosa Presented at the Western Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors Regional Conference

Dr. Gloria Sosa presented a session on "School Discipline Policies and Cultural Competency: Asking the Tough Questions" at the Regional Conference in Portland, Oregon on November 16th. Dr. Sosa also co-presented with Dr. Laura Heid and Vanessa Touset, GCP student, a session titled "Identifying the Skills, Academic Assets, and Personal and Professional Challenges of Bilingual Students."

Dr. Kathy Perez Presented at the 3rd World Conference on Learning, Teaching and Educational Leadership

Dr. Kathy Perez presented a paper on "Leadership for Learning and Instruction" in Brussels, Belgium in October 2012. This paper was also published in Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences Journal.

Drs. Alter, Sosa, and Thomas Co-Present at NorCal California Association of School Counselors Conference

Drs. Gloria Sosa (GCP) and Peter Alter (Ed Spec.), and Addie Ellis, lecturer, and Stacie McGraw, GCP student, presented at the California Association of School Counselors (CASC) conference in November. This was the 2nd Northern California CASC conference, held at Stanford University. Dr. Suzy Thomas served as the Co-chair of the conference.

Counseling Student Patricia Murillo Awarded McDaniel Scholarship

Dr. Suzy Thomas (shown in photo with Murillo) announced that School Counseling student, Patricia Murillo received the McDaniel Scholarship award for her collaborative action research study on first-generation Latino/a student in an urban charter school. She presented the study's findings at the award ceremony recently held at Stanford University.

Dr. Kathy Perez to Present at the World Conference in Belgium

 Dr. Perez will present a paper on "Transforming School Cultures through Teacher Leadership" at the World Conference on Learning, Teaching and Educational Leadership to be held in Brussels, Belguim on October 25 - 28.

Congratulations to Dr. Kathleen Taylor, professor in the Ed.D in Educational Leadership program. She will lecture and do research in Athens, Greece in 2013, according to the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
