After-School Reading Program
With partner school: Saint Martin de Porres Catholic School in Oakland, CA, KSOE’s Reading Leadership class (READ 254) will review assessment data to determine specific academic goals related to reading comprehension. From these results, an after-school tutoring curriculum and program will be developed. College students from a service-learning class in the pre-education/teacher candidate track of the Civic and Liberal Studies program at SMC will deliver the after-school reading program at the partner school site.

River of Words
River of Words—through its “Watershed Explorer” and “One Square Block” K-12 curricula—engages young people in an exploration of their local watersheds. River of Words’ inquiry-based model integrates environmental education with visual art and poetry. The program’s goal is to inspire and empower future generations of informed and compassionate earth stewards through their experience of the world around them.

LIFT UP! (Literacy Innovations For Teachers: Urban Partnership)
The Literacy Innovations for Teachers Urban Partnership (LIFT UP!) project is a literacy coaching collaboration between the KSOE and the Diocese of Oakland. The project is being implemented in four of the low-performing private schools in Oakland: Saint Jarlath, Saint Anthony, Saint Elizabeth, and Saint Martin de Porres Elementary Catholic Schools. The goal of the program is to have all primary grade students (K-3) acquire necessary literacy skills to become effective learners.

Reading Recovery Recognized in San Juan Unified School District News
The KSOE is proud to be a Reading Recovery University Training Center, one of 19 university sites for this post graduate program in North America. The Reading Recovery Teacher Leaders currently enrolled in our program provide teacher training in school districts in four states. Directed by Adria Klein, PhD, the program is a research-based reading intervention program which targets low-achieving 1st graders.

Community Outreach
A professional development workshop was recently held at the Saklan School, Moraga, CA on Sept. 20th, 2012 for K-8 teachers by KSOE faculty member, Peter Alter, Ph.D.. The topic “Differentiated Instruction for Struggling Learners,” was a part of an on-going partnership program to provide technical assistance to our public and private school teachers.

Community-Based Research Project
With guidance from Sawako Suzuko, Ph.D. in their Quantitative Research courses (EDAD 608 & 640), students in the Ed Leadership program (Cohort 11) collaborated with 3 community agencies to collect and analyze data to improve service to the youth and families in the community they serve. The community partners of Cohort 11 include © Unity Council of Oakland (Fruitvale District)'s Girls Sports Program (an after-school program for 4th and 5th grade girls), Youth Radio of Oakland (Downtown) and Urban Montessori Charter School of Oakland. This year, the students will continue their partnership in their Qualitative Research coursework with Kathleen Taylor, Ph.D..
