Additional Financial aid is available in the form of loan forgiveness programs:

  • APLE Loan Forgiveness Program is available to teaching credential candidates and provides for the cancellation of up to $19,000 in outstanding educational loans in exchange for 4 consecutive years of full-time teaching in K-12 in selected California schools. Applications are normally available at www.csac.ca.gov. However, per the  passage of the most recent state budget, no new applications will be accepted for the 2012-2013 academic year.
  • Stafford Loan Forgiveness Program for Teachers is intended to encourage individuals to enter and remain in the teaching profession. Under this program, you may receive up to $17,500 if you teach 5 consecutive academic years in schools or educational service agencies that serve low-income families, and meet other requirements.
  • Income-Based Repayment (IBR) is a new way to make your federal student loan payments more manageable.  And as a teacher or public servant, you may qualify for a new type of public service loan forgiveness after 10 years of eligible payments and employment.
  • National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment is loan forgiveness for primary care clinicians in exchange for working in underserved communities
