The surprise resignation of 85-year-old Pope Benedict XVI prompted two news radio outlets to reach out to Saint Mary's professors for commentary. KGO radio spoke with History Professor Brother Charles Hilken and KCBS radio spoke with Communication Professor Fr. Mike Russo about the resignation of the pontiff. The pope cited his age and declining health as the reasons for his resignation. The last time a pope resigned was 600 years ago. Both Hilken and Russo are Vatican scholars and have studied papal transitions in ancient and modern times.
Br. Charles specializes in medieval history, the history of the papacy and papal elections. A former contribitor to CBS News, Fr. Mike Russo provided analysis for CBS during the papal transitions in 1978 and 2005.
