KCBS news radio interviewed Saint Mary's Biology Professor Vidya Chandrasekaran about the current FDA probe into the energy drink Monster. The Food and Drug Administration launched an investigation into the energy drink after five deaths were attributed to consumption of the highly caffeinated beverage.
Chandrasekaran was interviewed live on KCBS's 6:30 evening news report about the lack of transparency in the levels of other caffeine-like stimulants in Monster and other energy drinks. The School of Science professor and several of her summer research students recently produced a research paper on how energy drinks can slow the healing rate of animal cells and said concern about the amount of caffeine and other stimulants like ginseng and guarana (also rich in caffeine) in these types of beverages is well founded. She said more research is necessary to see what effects these mixtures have on individuals. Listen to the report.
