Biography
Brother José H. Cervantes, FSC, Ph.D., 50 years of service spans a teaching career in grammar school through graduate education.
Born in Puebla, Mexico, Brother Jose attended Colegio Benavente, a Brothers’ school in Puebla, where he remained through his high school graduation. He earned degrees in Social Studies and Spanish literature from Universidad de Coahuila and studied English at Georgetown University. Brother Jose stayed on in Washington, D.C. and earned a Ph.D. in Sociology from Catholic University. He continued his studies abroad in both Austria and Germany.
A distinguished leader in higher education, Brother Jose served as President of the Mexican Federation of Private Institutions of Higher Education, as Visitor of North Mexico and as General Counselor to the Superior General in Rome. Three times serving as a university president, Brother Jose headed Universidad La Salle Institution in Mexico City, Obregon, and Chihuahua.
Brother José supported the establishment of the International Association of Lasallian Universities (IALU) and is now creating an office to coordinate six universities in his District. He is a trustee on a number of Lasallian Boards and served on Saint Mary’s College Board from 1999 to 2003.
Brother Jose touches hearts and minds worldwide through his teaching and writings on religious life, sociology and education.

- Attended grammar and high school at Colegio Benavente, a Brothers School in Puebla;
- Two B.A´s in Social Studies and Spanish Literature from Universidad de Coahuila, Mexico;
- English as a Foreign Language, Georgetown University;
- Ph.D. in Sociology from Catholic University, Washington, D.C.;
- Deutsch als Fremd Sprache University of Vienna; and
- Deutsch als fremnd Sprache Goethe Institut. Munchen, Stutugart, Rottenburg, Berlin.
Posts:
- Has taught for 50 years, from grammar school to graduate work;
- Visitor of México Norte (1969-1975) and General Counselor in Rome for 10 years (1976-1986);
- Founded the University of Monterrey (1969), Universidad La Salle Noroeste (1991) and Universidad La Salle Chihuahua (2000). Serves as president of the last two;
- President of Universidad La Salle, Mexico City (1987-1991);
- Member of the Boards of Trustees of Universidad de Monterrey, La Salle University in Philadelphia and Saint Mary´s College of California;
- Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago;
- President of the Mexican Private Universities Association;
- President of the Mexican Catholic Universities Association; and
- Director of the Centro de Formación y Liderato Universitarios in Mexico-North.
Other:
- He has lectured all over the World on religious life, sociology and education, and has written several books and numberless articles on these subjects.
