district of san francisco
The San Francisco District is a part of the International Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, commonly known as the De La Salle Christian Brothers. Founded in Reims, France in 1680, the De La Salle Christian Brothers is the largest congregation of religious Brothers in the Roman Catholic Church dedicated exclusively to education. Over 75,000 Brothers and lay colleagues conduct schools and educational works for over 850,000 students in over 80 countries worldwide.
Leadership: The District of San Francisco's administrative headquarters is called De La Salle Institute and is located at Mont La Salle in Napa, California. De La Salle Institute provides a multitude of support services for the Brothers and the affiliated schools and educational works of the District.
History and Heritage (archives): Founded in San Francisco in 1868, the District primarily supports its affiliated middle and secondary schools and educational ministries in Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, and Tijuana, BC, Mexico, as well as Saint Mary's College of California in Moraga. The District also collaborates with the other Districts of the USA/Toronto Region and the worldwide Institute.
Mission: As a part of the worldwide Institute, the District shares in a mission of conducting schools and cooperating in creating educational communities, particularly for and with those caught in situations of poverty that prevent them from accessing a quality human and Christian education. Inspired by the vision and traditions of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, Founder of the Christian Brothers and the Church's Patron Saint of All Teachers of Youth, our schools and educational works are based on core principles which characterize them as Catholic and uniquely Lasallian.”
