Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,
Welcome back to the January term and a new year. I would like to thank the many of you who have expressed your warm and encouraging regards as I take on the responsibilities of President. I look forward to our working together to make Saint Mary's College an even better institution.
We have all been saddened by the great loss of life and destruction caused by the recent earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia and beyond. In addition to offering prayers you are encouraged to make contributions to the relief effort. Campus Ministry is coordinating efforts with the Diocese of Oakland to take up special collections. Please consider stopping by the Campus Ministry offices to make a contribution, by cash or check. Make checks payable to "Catholic Relief Services." If you prefer to use a credit card, you can contribute directly at the CRS website. Campus Ministry will send all contributions to Catholic Relief Services.
Homecoming will be celebrated on Saturday January 15. Events will include an alumni memorial mass at 2:00 p.m., a spirit rally and briefing by men's basketball Coach Randy Bennett at 3:15 p.m. and a televised men's basketball game with Santa Clara at 5:00. The women's team plays at Santa Clara later in the evening. Both men's and women's teams go into league play with winning records, so get your tickets early, welcome back the alums and cheer on the Gaels.
The 38th annual President's Open House for prospective students and their families will be held Saturday January 22nd from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. This is an important opportunity for attendees to learn about programs, traditions, and values directly from individuals in our community who live them daily. Faculty and staff representatives will receive an invitation from my office shortly. Students who wish to participate as tour guides are encouraged to contact Laura Layton (x4449) in the Admissions Office.
The Superior General of the Christian Brothers, Br. Alvaro Rodriguez Echeverria will make an official visit to Saint Mary's College on January 27 and 28. He will dine with the Board of Trustees and Regents on the 27th and meet with a variety of campus groups on the 28th. More information about Br. Alvaro's visit will be forthcoming.
The annual College Convocation will be held on Wednesday, February 16th. This year we will be welcoming and honoring Br. Vincent Malham, Vice Chancellor and President of Bethlehem University. Saint Mary's College has close ties to Bethlehem University, as many Saint Mary's faculty and staff have had the privilege of working there. I served as the Vice Chancellor from 19931997.
The Admissions Office reports that as of 12/15 a record number of prospective TUG students have applied and been admitted for the fall 2005 term. Applications and acceptances for freshman class admission both grew by over 10% (11.9% and 12.0 respectively).
I will be away from campus until the 14th of January with my January term class in Ireland. However, in this electronic age, I won't be far from my office, via phone and email! Father Tom McElligott will accompany me to take over the class so I can return here by mid January.
Have a good and productive January term and take advantage of the variety of events and speakers provided during the month.
Br. Ron Gallagher
