Christian Service Internship is an experience of direct service and reflection in the tradition of Catholic Social Teaching

The Christian Service Internship (CSI) is being offered Jan Term 2013 with Brother Michael F Murphy FSC, PhD as the new Instructor of Record.  St. Mary's College clearly recognizes the tremendous positive impact that this academic program has had on so many students and, as a consequence, looks forward to the ways in which it will grow and develop through the Office of Mission and Ministry in the years ahead.

More Information on the Christian Service Internship (JAN 171) can be found in the Jan Term 2013 catalog on page 70 or on the Jan Term website here.

Course Description

The goal of the course is to engage reflectively in an experience of direct service to the disadvantaged and to relate this experience to a Christian tradition of such service as gleaned from the Scriptures, other assigned reading, papers, as well as seminar discussions and intercultural simulations.

Direct service will be given to those facing many types of disadvantages.  The CSI ministry sites include after-school tutoring centers, middle schools, high schools for court-adjudicated youth, catholic worker homes, daycare centers for the children of impoverished families, orphanages, educational centers on Native American Reservations, centers for the homeless, hospitals and many more.  Students will live in a community at or near the locations where they will be working.  The instructor approves an on-site supervisor, who meets regularly with the student.  A minimum of 30-40 hours per week of direct service is required.

A current list of ministry sites requesting volunteers are listed below as well as brief descriptions of each site, the populations served by each, and the work needed at each location.  Applicants are required to list their first, second, and third ministry site preferences.
