Major Requirements
A major in Spanish requires at least 12 courses.
Lower Division: 3 courses
- Spanish 4: Continuing Intermediate Spanish
- Spanish 9: Spanish for Spanish Speakers --or-- Spanish 10: Conversation-Composition
- Spanish 11: Introduction to Literature
Upper Division: 9 courses
- Spanish 101: Advanced Spanish Syntax and Composition
- Spanish 102: Advanced Writing and Research
- Spanish 120: Spanish Lit: Middle Ages to 18th Century --or-- Spanish 121: Spanish Lit: 18th Century to Present
- Spanish 140: Latin American Literature I --or-- Spanish 141: Latin American Literature II
- Plus, FIVE (5) Upper division electives in Spanish.
This is a program of study for students who wish to study Spanish whether or not they plan to continue their studies in graduate school. This option allows for Spanish as a second major.
Spanish 11 is a prerequisite for all Spanish upper division courses for students majoring/minoring in Spanish. Students who plan to study abroad that are Spanish majors/minors must complete this requirement before going abroad and before enrolling in upper division courses. Students who take Spanish classes abroad and who do not declare a Spanish major/minor prior to leaving cannot declare a major/minor in Spanish upon returning.The Department does not accept Spanish 11 courses taken in summer school or as an online class.
