News organizations covering developments in the Middle East, in particular in Iran, are increasingly turning to Saint Mary’s Politics Professor Hisham Ahmed.
In the segment “Tough Battle for U.S. Veteran sentenced in Iran,” NBC Bay Area News interviewed Ahmed about an Iranian court sentencing Amir Mirzaei Hekmati, an American ex-Marine to death. Hekmati was charged with working for an enemy country and other crimes of espionage for the U.S.
The American edition of the Voice of Russia also turned to Ahmed for its story “Iran’s military defiance,” which examined the rising military tone of Iran's officials and the increasing war of words between the country and the West.
Ahmed’s article “The Arab Spring, the West and Political Islam,” which examines the antecedents of uprisings in the Middle East over the past year, and offers perspectives on possible outcomes as a result of the sweeping political changes in the region, was published this month by “Against the Current,” a leftist bimonthly analytical journal.
