Saint Mary's College has partnered with Enterprise Rent-A-Car to bring WeCar, a car-sharing program, to the College. WeCar will launch Aug. 1 for the fall semester at Saint Mary's.
The intent of the new car-sharing program is to provide transportation options to students, faculty and staff who want to reduce transportation expenses and help the environment by lowering their carbon footprint. Saint Mary's is the first College in the Bay Area to offer WeCar to its students, faculty and staff.
Saint Mary's WeCar fleet will start out with two low emissions, high mileage hybrid vehicles located in front of Filippi Hall. SMC community members who enroll in the car-sharing program can reserve a car online. Vehicles are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The WeCar program will provide students, faculty and staff the flexibility to attend off-site college meetings or run occasional personal errands. WeCar's hybrid vehicles rent for $10 per hour with an enrollment fee of $20 and an annual member fee of $25.
Unlike other car sharing services, the WeCar program is not available for public use. The car sharing program contracts only with businesses and educational institutions.
For drivers 21 and older, auto liability insurance is included in the WeCar program. However, students 18 to 20 must submit a consent form indicating a parent or guardian is providing insurance for them.
While the car-sharing program begins officially in August, WeCar will waive the enrollment fee of $20 for SMC community members who sign up by June 1.
