What: Lincoln at 200 – In Fact Rather than Fiction:
As we commemorate the
bicentennial anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, our sixteenth president remains an
enigmatic figure shrouded in myth and legend. Was he, for example, genuinely interested in
the welfare of the African American? Given his lack of experience, was he an effective
military commander? Where did he fit within his party (radical, moderate, conservative)?
By focusing on Lincoln as great emancipator, commander in chief, political leader,
constitutionalist, architect of reconstruction, and as an uncommon common man, Professor
Henig will attempt to separate fact from fiction.
Who: Currently teaching a course on U.S. history at Saint Mary’s College,Gerald S. Henig is emeritus professor of history at California State University, East Bay. During his 40-year career at CSUEB, he received the Outstanding Professor Award and was a four-time winner of the Pi Kappa Delta Best Lecturer Award.
