August 12, 2009Overflow Crowd Attends 10th Congressional District Candidates Forum at SMC
An
overflow crowd of nearly 500 voters packed the Soda Activity Center to hear the 11
Democratic and Republican candidates seeking to replace former Rep. Ellen Tauscher in the
10th Congressional District. The two-hour forum was sponsored by Saint Mary’s College
of California, the League of Women Voters of Diablo Valley and the Contra Costa Times.
The five Democratic and six Republican candidates participating in the September 1
special election answered questions from the audience on a variety of issues, including
health care reform, transportation funding, Middle East policy and taxes. Steve
Woolpert, dean of the School of Liberal Arts at Saint Mary's, welcomed the community to
the College and Lisa Voderbrueggen, political reporter for the Contra Costa Times, served
as moderator.
The event was covered by several news outlets, including the Sacramento Bee, KCBS-Radio, KPFA-Radio and KTVU-TV.
