Gael Glimpses, 1960-1969


1968

 Ed Blake tried teaching at his alma mater, St. Elizabeth’s High School, but learned that it wasn’t for him. In 1969, he enlisted in the Navy and after serving in the war he moved with his wife, Lenore, to Milpitas where he sold electronic components in California and northern Nevada. He bought the company in 1984 and moved it to Milpitas from Fremont. Ed and Lenore have two daughters, Carla and Christine. Both are married and Carla has two children, who are 3 and 2.
Patrick Clements and his wife, Connie, celebrated their 40th anniversary on June 29. They have four married sons and 10 grandchildren. Pat is president of Church Extension Plan in Salem, Ore., and an ordained minister of the Assemblies of God Fellowship.
Br. Anthony Lenz FSC started his 10th year at the Lasallian Educational Opportunities Center (LEO Center) in September. He is thankful to all the SMC students and professors who have volunteered to tutor at the center and will be grateful for any donations given to help the junior and senior high school students in Oakland’s inner city. Checks should be made out to The LEO Center and mailed to P.O. Box 3238, Oakland, CA 94609.
 Michael Trainor MS ’95 is now principal of high school/middle at Nagoya International School in Nagoya, Japan. This is his fourth overseas assignment, having previously worked in Jordan and Turkey (twice). He has three grandsons under the age of 3. One of his sons is a lawyer in Southern California and the other is in medical device sales on the East Coast. His enduring connection to SMC has been oriented around the rugby program. He is unmarried, but that is likely to change within the year.


1966

Philip Kain was appointed chair of the Philosophy Department at Santa Clara University.
Clarification: Bob Cone, whose Glimpse ran in the fall ’08 issue, is the Peace Corps country director for Macedonia.


1965

Terry Bliquez and his wife, Kathy, are in their 14th year of ministry in San Antonio running a nonprofit business, Sky Cross, which provides basic food sustenance and medical supplies to the very poor families living on the Texas–Mexico border. They started the organization after Terry retired from the Air Force.


1963

Dick Claeys started his third year as a teaching assistant at DeAnza College in Cupertino, leading lab sessions and tutoring students in reading and writing skills.
Dan O’Laughlin was a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana from 1967 to 1970, then worked with the labor movement in various parts of Africa until he retired in Ghana in 2005. He spends most of his time helping with programs for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts. By year’s end, a recovery house guided by a nonprofit Dan set up is expected to be in place to provide a protective environment for recovering Ghanaians.
