Jim Leal EE ML '03 was appointed police chief in Newark by the city council in July. The 43-year-old is the youngest chief in the city's history. Leal has worked in the Newark Police Department for 20 years in a variety of positions, including as a patrol officer, field training officer and detective. 
Helio Brasil ME is celebrating his seventh year as superintendent of the Merced River School District (Merced County). Helio previously was an assistant principal in the Riverbank and Oakdale school districts and was Ustach Middle School's principal. He lives in the Modesto area and does educational consulting in the Central Valley.
