2006 honor roll of donors
Reflections on a Year of Progress & Success
Dear Friends,
Saint Mary's College has concluded its 142nd year as a vibrant and viable institution. Credit is due to many in the Saint Mary's family who are dedicating their talents and resources to advancing our mission. This report includes stories on several individuals and families who epitomize the graciousness and generosity which empower our efforts.
The 2005–2006 year saw many accomplishments. We are proud of our students. According to The National Survey of Student Engagement, they registered high satisfaction with their educational experiences and considerable educational and personal growth, compared to peer institutions. More than 1,500 students were involved in service projects and activities within the College and in the local and national community.
Classroom success and service were matched by athletic performance. In 2005–2006, Saint Mary's rose from eighth to fourth place among West Coast Conference member institutions in overall athletic performance. Under new Athletic Director Mark Orr, we expect even greater accomplishments in the coming year.
Our beautiful campus is undergoing renovation and change. Last May, work began on Filippi Academic Hall, which will house the Paul J. and Lydia C. Kalmanovitz School of Education. The 37,000-square-foot hall is scheduled to open in late 2007.
Other improvements on campus include a new turf stadium field, a new cardiovascular fitness center in Madigan Gym and the addition of a new heating/air-conditioning system in Dante Hall. A successful campaign by former rugby players is allowing a major renovation this fall of Pat Vincent Field, long-time home to nationally ranked Gael rugby.
The College ended the fiscal year in solid financial shape. In a period of heightened — and legitimate — concern about affordability, Saint Mary's continued to dedicate considerable resources of supporting students of modest means. More than 70 percent of our students receive financial aid, and nearly a quarter of our undergraduate students come from families with incomes less than the annual cost of tuition, room and board.
Maintaining affordability is among the strategic issues facing the College. A strategic planning initiative, aimed at building on our strengths and enhancing our mission, is underway this fall. This effort involves a diverse group of College faculty, staff, students and support groups and an experienced consultant. The process will lead to strategic recommendations that will prepare the College as it reaches it 150th anniversary in 2013.
On behalf of the Christian Brothers and all who assist in achieving the Catholic, Lasallian and liberal arts mission of Saint Mary's College, I offer thanks and appreciation to the many donors who are recognized in this issue of the Saint Mary's Magazine.
In Saint La Salle,
Brother President Ronald Gallagher, FSC
