Conserving Water
SMC is becoming more environmentally sustainable through efforts that include campaigns to save water and energy.
Plumbing upgrades including low-flow showers and toilets and waterless urinals, which save 13,500 gallons per day, were installed in dormitories, earning the College a “WaterSmart School” designation.
Still, nearly 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students and hundreds of faculty and staff members use water, and landscaping, even with drought-tolerant plants, needs irrigation. In September and October 2007, Saint Mary’s used an average of 284,240 gallons per day.
“We’re a thirsty place, and water will be more and more of a challenge,” says Dean of Liberal Arts Steve Woolpert.
