Gael Glimpses, 1960-1969

1969

The Rev. Wayne Campbell was appointed as pastor of Moraga’s St. Monica’s Catholic Church, effective Jan. 1, 2008. Father Campbell attended SMC as a Christian Brother from 1965–1969. He was a passenger service manager for Eastern Airlines for more than eight years until 1981, when he began to minister in the Diocese of Oakland. He was ordained a priest for the Oakland Diocese in 1986 and has served at parishes in Hayward, Walnut Creek and most recently was pastor of St. Felicitas Church in San Leandro. He is delighted to return to Moraga and remembers the founding of St. Monica parish in 1965 when he was a freshman at SMC. The College Chapel served as the first parish church until St. Monica’s was built in 1974.
Thomas Ryan and his wife, Linda, were awaiting the arrival of their seventh grandchild, due in February 2008, when their oldest grandchild will be 4.

1967

Jim Ellis, a graduate the Integral Program, spent many happy years as a Christian Brother and for the last several years has been vice president/corporate of Willamette Valley Vineyards in Oregon, a top producer of premium Oregon Pinot Noir. He invites any member of the SMC family to stop by for a tour and tasting — the winery is located just south of Salem on I-5. Visit their web site www.willamettevalleyvineyards.com.

1965

Anthony A. “Tony” Kopera is president and CEO of Community Counseling Center of Chicago, a behavioral health advocate and social service provider that helps individuals and families who are struggling with mental illness, emotional trauma, substance abuse and the aftermath of sexual assault. The center, which opened in 1972, is a grassroots response to a government policy that released people from psychiatric hospitals and left communities with the task of developing care for them in neighborhoods ill-equipped to provide for their needs. The center helps approximately 7,000 people annually, 92 percent of whom live below the poverty level and 52 percent of whom have no income.
Richard Ladner was appointed to Gallaudet University’s Board of Trustees in October. He is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, where he is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of Linguistics. Ladner’s parents, Emil and Mary, and his sister, Suzanne Boesen, are Gallaudet alumni. Ladner is fluent in American Sign Language, and he has made efforts to help the University of Washington become more welcoming to deaf students, faculty and staff.

1964

Tom Hersant retired in August after 43 years with the state of California. He worked in personnel, contracts, civil rights, social research (as project director for the Elderly Housing Research Project) and concluded as regional manager of the San Diego/Imperial County region of child care licensing for the Department of Social Services. He and his wife, Tonya, a primary school teacher for the Encinitas School District, live in Carlsbad and love to travel. They have visited six of the seven continents, so far — the elusive penguin still beckons them. For his retirement gift, Tom gave himself a putting green in his back yard and is now applying himself to lowering that handicap to a respectable number.

1963

Jack Seybold (right) retired to Ashland, Ore. in 2001 and has performed in a dozen theater productions. He recently was Grandpa in Meet Me in St. Louis. His 2004 novel, The Rising: Journeys in the Wake of Global Warming, is still quite topical. He was joined at a class of ’63 reunion with (from left) Mike Smith, Al Frugaletti, George Silvestri and Don Crosby.

1962

Michael Sinclair, a surgeon in Allentown, Penn., began working with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) a year ago. So far, he has completed three surgical missions with the organization, two in Nigeria and one in Sri Lanka.

1961

Paul Alvarado retired in August 2006 after 20 years as a San Francisco Superior Court judge. He continues to sit as a judge on assignment in between trips to visit a son stationed at Pearl Harbor on a nuclear submarine and taking a daughter to New York to start a nursing program at NYU. He also attended parents’ weekend at the U.S. Naval Academy, where his second son is a midshipman.
